Intersectionality: What is it?
Intersectionality is based on understanding the ways that different forms of oppression interact. For example if someone is transgender and physically disabled they will have a different experience as a transgender person who is able bodied. This may affect their experiences in ways like, maybe they aren't able to go to their local pride because it isn't able to accommodate their disability, or they aren't able to transition in the ways they want because of complications from their disability. Intersectionality can be experienced in a multitude of ways based of of their different identities. Intersectionality is often discussed in regards to race. A black trans woman might not feel welcome in transgender or black spaces because she is at an intersection of those identities. That's why when we are creating spaces for people to feel accepted we have to consider the intersecting identities that people can have.
